Hi all
You may already be aware but Biffaward have recently opened the 2009 round of their small grants and flagship grants schemes. The greentriangle is located close enough to both a Biffa facility and a land fill site to qualify. Community groups can apply for grants of £250 up to £50,000 to improve community facilities or enhance local biodiversity. For full info, see the website: www.biffaward.org Any thoughts?

Several people have questions about coal and carbon capture and storage (CCS) so would be good to have a discussion on these issues. Oxfam has just released a 44 page report entitled "The forecast for tomorrow: the UK's climate for change". Here is a relevant paragraph from it. It pretty much summarizes how I feel.
"In the meantime, with no timetable for fitting power stations with CCS, and no commercial reason to do so, BERR is on the cusp of approving a new unabated coal-fired plant at Kingsnorth in Kent (see E.ON section). If approved, Kingsnorth will open the way for at least five other coal plants that could threaten the UK’s emissions-reduction obligations and undermine the UK’s political leadership on climate change. The government’s former Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir David King, has warned, ‘If we can manage [CCS] then of course we can continue to use coal to drive our economies, but frankly I haven’t seen the proof that can be done. This is still unproven technology, and I think until it’s proven, it’s dangerous to assume that we can continue to use coal.'" I noticed that there seems to be some interest in wood burners. I have noticed since some of my neighbours have installed these that the air is often smoky outside the house, and my laundry (and cats) come inside smelling of smoke. I have heard that these are 'carbon neutral', however wonder what the city would be like if everyone had one. Is there any debate about this? I suspect that there is wide variation on quality of wood burners, some of which let off more smoke than they're supposed to. There is also the issue of where wood is sourced from, and often people use wood burners in summer when they would not normally use gas heating. I would be interested to hear your opinions. Andrea

These are the other straplines that were suggested at the meeting in the spring. I'll rotate them every so often, or feel free to do so yourself. Add new ones to the list as well. Also, if anyone knows how to spell 'strapline' (strap-line/ strap line?), please say:
...Kent, Albert and Shirebrook cutting carbon ...together for a greener neighbourhood ...a bit of Meersbrook getting a bit greener ...getting greener together locally ...the green household effect (up at the moment) ...sustainable living in urban S8 ...funstainability in our neighbourhood

The next Park/Heeley Area Panel meeting is on Tuesday 7 October, possibly at St Paul's Church in Norton Lees. Denise Reaney (chair) has made a formal complaint to the manager of the Area Panel Co-ordinators because the details of the Park/Heeley Area Panel are not getting put onto the Council's website in a timely manner. This Panel meeting will be an extra special one because the details of the new Community Assemblies proposals will be rolled out so please spread the word.
We talked at the last meeting about going to this to ask what the area panel is doing/could do to promote low-carbon lifestyles etc... perhaps we should talk at a future meeting about details of what we want to ask.

Just a topic for discussion... everybody stay calm...
I am getting feedback from people 'outside the triangle', referred henceforth as OTTs that the GT is a bit exclusive and rather plays to existing stereotypes of us all (particulalry on Shirebrook! :) ) Do we turn OTTs away from meetings / events etc? How do OTTs learn about setting up a similar sister group is they aren't closely involved? How do we become more inclusive to the as yet unjoined 500+ people in the GT Discuss.... Cheers, James, (happily living up to or breaking stereotypes as required since 1977) Shirebrook Road

Two of us went up to the site with the community tree officer, Moira Walker, to discuss tree planting at the top of Kent Road. There were 5 other people there, most of whom live on the spur of Kent Rd (ie outside the triangle!). All were very keen on tree planting. We looked through catalogues and Moira was keen to accommodate ideas. It seems there are at least 6 and probably more trees we could have. We stressed fruit trees, possibly a walnut and trees with nice autumn colours. We also looked at the site and discussed where to plant. Moira is now going to see what she can purchase and organise a tree plenting event later in the year. I also asked her: 1) if we could plant tees at the junction of Albert and Shirebrook road. She said she would look into whether it woud interfere with cables/ pipes etc and get back to us. 2) If she could get a replacement flowering cherry for the one that was stolen from Kent rd garden. She thought she probably could. I am sure Moira would be hapy to come along to any of our meetings to follow up on other ideas and queries we were airing last time. (GT Emails 04/10/07)

Leonardo DiCaprio's 11th Hour ( www.11thhourfilm.com ). A friend went to see a screening of this film last week and recommended it... Impactful images and a formidable army of experts from a variety of disciplines and organisations discuss their take on the challenge of climate change. Leonardo asks us if we're going to allow this to be our darkest hour or choose it to be our finest moment. Good question. What's your answer? What inspired him most were the solutions put forward. As well as the top ten of switching off lights and cycling to work, we had the likes of William McDonagh, Time Magazine's 'Hero for the Planet'. William is an architect and designer and he comments: 'If we think about the tree as a design, it's something that makes oxygen, sequesters carbon, fixes nitrogen, distils water, provides a habitat for hundreds of species, accrues solar energy, makes complex sugars and food, creates micro-climates, self-replicates. So, what would it be like to design a building like a tree? What would it be like to design a city like a forest? So, what would a building be like if it were photosynthetic? What if it took solar energy and converted it to productive and delightful use?' www.mcdonagh.com The idea of looking deeply at nature, recognising we're not remotely separate from it, and learning how to change our world in alignment with it, is an extraordinarily inspiring vision for the future. It makes this the most amazing time to be alive. It means we can develop and evolve to reverse what damage we've generated. We have the choice to become a more inclusive breed and sustain humanity or not. "I have found that if you love life, life will love you back." Arthur Rubinstein (GT Emails 15/01/08)

As Minibitz, beautiful architecture is coming up for sale, I'd been thinking how marvellous it would be to have a shop of the kind we need and want in the locality. Actually, it would be marvellous to have an Oxfam shop with clothes recycling, books ditto and fair trade stuff all here right on our doorstep, with a tools resource library in a room behind, wouldn't it? Well, Oxfam are looking for fresh neighbourhoods! Heeley Development Trust, (Andy Jackson) are right behind us on this, and sending data to back it up. Walter, from Oxfam is coming to do a recce in the area and will look at Minibitz, and also the shop for rent by model railway shop. (GT Email 23/06/08)
