How do we make our houses more efficient? Tell us what resources and skills you have that you can share with others in the group. These are the suggested headings: Green Buildings; Local Eco-house Project; Draught-proofing & Insulation. There's various other tools and expertise that can be shared within the group, and these are listed at the bottom where they don't already fit in under another heading.

NEW STUFF:

Rob & Kev's Interior Insulation

  • There is now a photo album detailing the process of installing interior insulation (at Kev and Rob's house). When you go to the album, you can either view it as a slideshow, or to see more information on each photo, click on the individual photo. You will then see a larger version of the photo with a yellow box to its right containing a description of the picture. A help sheet will soon be available as well.
  • A fact sheet 'Installing interior insulation for solid wall houses' is available as an attachment at the bottom of the page.

Rented Housing and Affordable Warmth

  • Anyone out there live in rented housing? I know there's lots of Housing Association properties around Albert Road. I live in a South Yorkshire Housing Association one and would be interested to hear from anyone living in rented accomodation who is also trying to watch their carbon footprint/ energy bills. Contact Gilly .

Solar Panel information sheet

  • A Shirebrook resident has put together a sheet detailing their experience of installing solar photo-voltaic panels and solar water heating panels - this is attached to the bottom of this page.

Energy Saving Triangular Tour Saturday 13th September 2008

  • See the Past Events Scrapbook. This was well attended and there were lots of examples from local houses of energy saving projects that had been undertaken (eg triple glazing, internal wall insulation, cellar roof insulation, installation of wood-burning stoves, a conservatory, solar photo-voltaic panels (producing electricity), and solar water-heating panels) This means there's lots of local knowledge out there, and we will try and make either the information or contact details available on the wiki over the next few months. In the meantime, contact Rob or send us an email. Some information is already shown below. There were also simpler and cheaper tips such as using perspex to add an insulating layer to windows and backing radiators with foil.

Green Buildings

Local Eco House Project

  • See the attachments at the bottom of the page for our new Low Environmental Impact Houses on Shirebrook Road It would be great to get some feedback (good or bad) before we submit to planning These files are all reduced in quality to keep the file small (2MB). Contact me if you want paper copies or hi res versions (5MB) which are much better quality: contact James Norton

Draught-proofing & Insulation

  • There's definitely some experience (trial and error?) in the group. Please share.
  • I'll exchange whatever you might have to offer for some home-made draught-excluders (plain or with animal features?): Contact Gilly I'm still thinking of a good filling/ stuffing, so let me know if you've any ideas.
  • KevWalters and Rob have insulated three rooms of their solid-walled stone house using insulated plasterboard (phenolic foam) and some polystyrene (due to ignorance and difficulty in finding useful info on local suppliers). A fact sheet of costs, methods, links to websites and local suppliers will appear shortly. Should will have some photos of different stages of the work.

I noticed that there seems to be some interest in wood burners. I have noticed since some of my neighbours have installed these that the air is often smoky outside the house, and my laundry (and cats) come inside smelling of smoke. I have heard that these are 'carbon neutral', however wonder what the city would be like if everyone had one. Is there any debate about this? I suspect that there is wide variation on quality of wood burners, some of which let off more smoke than they're supposed to. There is also the issue of where wood is sourced from, and often people use wood burners in summer when they would not normally use gas heating. I would be interested to hear your opinions. Andrea
